Cub Scout Day Camp

Saturday, May 4, 2013. Landon and Chad went to Landon's First Cub Scout Day camp at Camp Shenandoah, near Staunton, VA.  Landon had a blast.  We went with Matt and Landon Grawrock.  Landon and Landon are pretty much inseparable, so they had a ton of fun, doing all the activities together.  I think though that they had the most fun at a couple PARTICULAR activities.  But, we'll get to that.  It was supposed to be a family day camp, but Since Sydney early in the day was diagnosed with Strep throat, Michelle stayed home with The girls and it was Just Chad and Landon, and the Grawrocks...just the boys!

The first of the day was a blindfolded obstacle course.  Both Landon's were a little hesitant at first, but the "if you do it I'll do it" took control of the situation, and they both ended up donning the blindfolds and going for it.

Next Landon made a "scout game."  It consisted of finding a pine cone on the ground, getting a dixie cup, poking a hole in the bottom of the cup, tying a string through the hole in the bottom of the cup, and then around the pinecone.  Then swing the pinecone up and try and catch it in the cup.  Landon did his the VERY first time.  He kept telling everyone all day, at whatever he was doing, that he just had beginners luck that day.

Next it was on to water rockets.  It was a pump connected to PVC pipe and they stuck a water bottle on the other end.  He pumped the pump and it pushed air into the bottle, and when there is enough pressure...BLAST OFF!!!

The climbing wall was up next and the boys were TOTALLY all about it.  Landon did great and looked like a real Pro!!

I think he was made to shoot!  Landon picked up archery REALLY quick, and didn't want to leave the range.

His first notched arrow, hit the target..just above the black circle, but it hit it non-the-less.  He proceeded to tell everyone around that "it's ok, because I just have beginners luck today."  Ha ha, humble man!!!

The only way we got the Landon's off the Archery Range was to take them DIRECTLY to the firing range.  Ok, it was B.B guns, but they didn't care...it was guns, and they wanted to SHOOT them!!!

Landon Picked up the gun, did the safety checks with the instructor and then put it up to his shoulder and got ready to fire.  He looks like he's been doing this a lot in the backyard at all the wild rabbits we have running around (FYI, he hasn't been, so no worries you rabbit lovers out there.)  Anyway, so guess what happened on his first shot...Yup...he hit the target which was a pie tin, so you knew he had hit it.  He promptly turned and said..."Wow, do I have beginners luck today or what!!"  He hit most of the shots he took.  He's a natural.

He is loving this!  I thought he would NEVER put the gun down!

Well, we got the guns out of their hands but getting snow cones (you can see them in their hands) and then we did the flour in the sock toss.  Landon got 2 bulls-eyes.  How you might ask?  Well, it was "beginners luck" he told the activity director.

We then headed over to the rope bridge.  Landon loved it till about half way across when he got a splinter from the rope.  After that he thought it wasn't as fun anymore.  HA HA

Well, on the way to the next activity, they saw more guns.  This time it was only rubber band shooters, but they HAD to stop and shoot some more.  Well, ole Dead Eye Landon was a crack shot at this too.  They had to shoot down 6 cans stacked like a triangle.  He hit them and knocked them down and attributed it to ... you guessed it..."beginners luck."

Next onto the rain gutter regatta.  The boys liked this one and the dads even got into it.  Sad to say, Landon beat Chad by a good margin.  Chad says it just proves that Landon is full of Hot Air!  HA HA.

Hat making.  It wasn't EXACTLY like what Chad and Matt thought, but the boys thought it was pretty awesome!  In fact, Landon has worn the hat around the house for the past couple of days.  Michelle has seen him wearing it a couple times and started to tell him to take it off because it looks ridiculous, but the words never get out because of the laughter that the sight of Landon wearing his hat induces!

One of Landon other favorites was this stop.  What are they doing you ask?  Well simple, it is a large stump, and they boys grab nails and just pound them into the stump.  Simple yet effect - energy - getter rid of activity!!

One of the last was a type of corn hole game, just without the hole in the board or the bean bags.  They had little rings they tossed and had to get the to stay of the board.  Again, harder than it looks, Landon beat Chad.

Here is the view from the other side.

The day ended with a Life Size checkers game.  It was actually a bummer for the boys kind of.  The station said checkers OR chess.  Well both the boys have done an after school program to learn to play chess.  So they though that that would be awesome...Life sized check, similar to what they have seen and read about in Harry Potter right?  Well we got there and the activity director guys said that they could only play checkers.  So they started out bummed, but got into it by the end.  We had to leave early as the camp was closing before the game was done.  So they boys finished in a tie with the same amount of pieces left on the board.  That actually was  great way to finish the day.  They had a blast and are already planning the trip to the day camp next year!!!

Wow, what a camp! Sounds like a lot of fun. You guys have a lot of cool activities - I think my boys might be a little jealous ;)
